چکیده

In this paper, I introduce the light curves of comets, bright comets or interesting comets with peculiar light curves, observed during a year between 2005 March and 2006 February. My web page "Comet Catalog" also introduces the light curves of comets, including ones not described in this paper. This graph represents the brightness change with a heliocentric brightness, corrected magnitude as observed on the Sun, in the vertical axis. The light curve of this comet was completely theoretical. It is already farther than 5 A.U., however, the total light curve can be expressed by the following one formula. The light curve is stable probably because the comet is a big one and the perihelion distance is not too small. However, in the case of many other big comets with somewhat large perihelion distance, their light curves are not so stable. For example, the light curve formula had to be changed on the way even in the case of Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) or C/2001 Q4 (NEAT). The following graph represents the coma size change, plotting the observed apparent diameter in arcmin, and the actual coma size as a multiple against the Earth diameter. This comet is a good sample to see the coma size change. It passed very near by the Earth

Non-gravitational forces and masses of some long-period comets. The cases of Hale-Bopp and Hyakutake

By means of a simple non-gravitational force model of the cometary nucleus, which relies on the observed light curves assumed to be a good representation of the water sublimation rate, we estimate the masses of a sample of long-period comets (LPCs). A critical issue of our method is the assumption of a correlation between visual heliocentric magnitudes and water production rates. This is a nece...

The nuclei of comets 7 P / Pons - Winnecke , 14 P / Wolf and 92 P / Sanguin ⋆

Jupiter Family comets (JFCs) are short period comets which have recently entered the inner solar system, having previously orbited in the Kuiper Belt since the formation of the planets. We used two nights on the 3.6m New Technology Telescope (NTT) at the European Southern Observatory, to obtain V RI photometry of three JFCs; 7P/Pons-Winnecke, 14P/Wolf and 92P/Sanguin. These were observed to be ...

Oort Cloud Formation and Dynamics

The Oort cloud is the primary source of the “nearly isotropic” comets, which include new and returning long-period comets and Halley-type comets. We focus on the following topics: (1) the orbital distribution of known comets and the cometary “fading” problem; (2) the population and mass of the Oort cloud, including the hypothetical inner Oort cloud; (3) the number of Oort cloud comets that surv...

Origin and Dynamical Evolution of Comets and Their Reservoirs

This text was originally written to accompany a series of lectures that I gave at the ‘35th Saas-Fee advanced course’ in Switzerland and at the Institute for Astronomy of the University of Hawaii. It reviews my current understanding of the dynamics of comets and of the origin and primordial sculpting of their reservoirs. It starts discussing the structure of the Kuiper belt and the current dyna...
